Timmins is the service centre for a very large district, and the distances between its communities are the first thing to plan around.

What staffing in Timmins actually looks like

French is a hard requirement in much of this district, not a nice-to-have. Roughly a third of Timmins residents report French as a mother tongue, more than half are bilingual, and the whole District of Cochrane is designated under the French Language Services Act. We screen for it as a matter of course and we will tell you when we cannot meet it.

Mining sets the wage floor. Six major operators run around Timmins, and mining employment income here is far above what a PSW or RPN earns. That is the real competition for shift-tolerant workers, and it is why rates that work in southern Ontario simply do not fill lines here. We would rather have that conversation before the booking than explain a released shift afterwards.

The roads are the other constraint. Highway 144 south to Sudbury runs 270 kilometres through forest with almost nothing on it, and the Highway 11 corridor has closed for hundreds of kilometres at a stretch in winter storms. Coverage across the district works when it is planned as standing lines with local people; it does not work as short-notice dispatch from the city.
