What Toronto Families Are Usually Dealing With
Toronto is not one home care market. A parent aging in a Forest Hill or Lawrence Park house faces a completely different set of problems from a parent in a downtown condo or a Scarborough bungalow, and the care plan should not look the same.
In the older central neighbourhoods — Rosedale, Forest Hill, Leaside, the Annex — the recurring issue is the house itself: three storeys, a steep staircase, a basement laundry, and a strong wish not to leave a home the family has held for decades. In condo buildings the problems are different: isolation, missed meals, and no one noticing for days that something has changed.
After a hospital discharge in Toronto
Toronto families are discharged from a wide range of hospitals — among them Sunnybrook, the University Health Network sites, Mount Sinai, St. Michael’s, Michael Garron, North York General and Humber River. What they have in common is that the discharge date often arrives at short notice, and publicly funded hours arranged through Ontario Health atHome may not start the same day.
The riskiest stretch is the first seven to ten days at home. Private care is commonly used to cover exactly that window — medication timing, safe transfers, overnight presence — and then reduced or stopped once the publicly funded plan is running.

Resources
How care usually starts in Toronto
Drawn from real cases in this area. Details are generalized and nothing identifying is included — we do not publish information about the people we care for.
A diagnosis that changes everything
A family in midtown were given an ALS diagnosis and told what was coming, but not what to do about the next month. We started with four hours a day — mornings, when transfers and personal care are hardest — and adjusted as needs changed. The point was never to take over. It was to keep someone in their own home while the family absorbed what they had been told.
A daughter calling from another city
She lived in Vancouver. Her father lived alone near Lawrence Park and had stopped answering the phone reliably. We began the following day with five hours daily — meals, medication reminders, and someone actually in the house. Distance is one of the most common reasons families call us, and it is one of the easiest to solve.
A discharge with no plan for the first week
A woman in her eighties was discharged after a fall, into a three-storey house with the only full bathroom upstairs. Care started the same day. Six hours daily for the first fortnight, then down to four once she was steady. She did not go back to hospital, and she did not have to leave her home.
What this looks like in practice
Most families in Toronto start with four to six hours of care a day. Care usually begins within a day of the first call, and the same day where someone is coming out of hospital — typically Sunnybrook, the University Health Network sites, Mount Sinai, St. Michael’s, Michael Garron, North York General or Humber River.
We support people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s, ALS, paraplegia and reduced mobility, and older adults who simply need help to manage the day. In almost every case above, the outcome was the same: the person stayed in their own home and received their care there.
