What a normal day looks like now, what has changed, and which part of it has stopped working. You do not need to know what service you want — that is our job.

Support worker, Personal Support Worker or nurse — and whether therapy or social work belongs alongside it. Including when the honest answer is less care than you expected.

You get the cost in plain numbers
The hourly rate for the level of care discussed, and what a realistic weekly schedule would come to. We will also tell you what publicly funded care you should be asking Ontario Health atHome about first.

We match a caregiver
Screened, credentialed and matched to the person rather than simply available. You meet them before care starts wherever the timing allows it.
Useful to have on hand — but not required
- Roughly what help is needed, and on which days
- Any recent hospital stay, fall or change in condition
- A current list of medications, if there is one
- Whether anyone else is already helping, paid or unpaid
- The postal code where care would be delivered
If you have none of this, call anyway. Plenty of people phone us on the day something has gone wrong and work it out as they go.
Questions families ask before they call
Is the consultation really free?
Yes. There is no charge for the consultation and no obligation to book care afterwards. We are not going to invoice you for a conversation.
How quickly can care start?
Often within a day of your first call, and the same day where someone is coming out of hospital. Short-notice starts are normal for us — tell us the timing on the call and we will tell you honestly what we can cover.
Do I have to sign a long-term contract?
No. Schedules are changed or stopped as needs change. If you only need help on appointment days, say so and we will arrange three hours a week rather than sell you hours you do not need.
How much does home care cost in Ontario?
It depends on the level of care and the number of hours. A support worker costs less than a Personal Support Worker, and nursing costs more than both because it is delivered by regulated staff. You will get the hourly rate and a realistic weekly figure on the call, before you commit to anything. See our home care services page for what each level includes.
Should I be using publicly funded care instead?
Quite possibly, and we will tell you. Ontario Health atHome coordinates publicly funded home care at no cost to families, and a referral can come from a hospital, a family doctor or a nurse practitioner. Private care is worth buying for the hours that are not covered, for nights and weekends, and where you want the same worker each visit — not instead of something you are entitled to.
Who will actually be coming into the home?
A worker who has been screened, has had their registration or certification verified with the relevant College or issuing body where the role requires it, has a current record check appropriate to the setting, and has completed our orientation. Nothing is outstanding when a worker is assigned.
Can you help if I live outside Ontario but my parent lives here?
Yes, and it is common. Adult children arranging care from another province or country is a large part of what we do. You can be the main contact and we will report back to you after visits.
What if I am not sure what kind of care is needed?
That is the most common reason people call. Describe the situation and we will tell you what level fits. If the answer is that you do not need us yet, we will say that too.
