Every neighbouring community here is 45 to 140 kilometres away on two-lane highway. A single shift in Sioux Lookout is close to a 200 kilometre round trip. That is not a reason to say no, but it is a reason to book standing lines rather than expect short-notice cover, and to plan the winter margin into shift start times on Highways 17, 72 and 105.

Long-term care here is governed regionally rather than locally, with the same board licensing homes hundreds of kilometres apart across northwestern Ontario. In practice that means postings and staffing pressures move together across widely separated towns, and a worker recruited for Dryden may see the same employer advertising in Kenora and Red Lake.

Confederation College has a Dryden campus, which gives the town more local training presence than most communities its size in the northwest. It is a real advantage — and it is still a small base. Recruiting here means recruiting people who already live in the northwest.
