Resources

How care usually starts in Thornhill

Drawn from real cases in this area. Details are generalized and nothing identifying is included — we do not publish information about the people we care for.

Two municipalities, one neighbourhood

Thornhill is split down Yonge Street between Markham and Vaughan, and that line matters more than it should. Families discover it when a publicly funded service stops at the boundary, or when a parent on one side of Yonge is assessed by a different team than a sibling expected. The housing does not respect the line either — postwar bungalows around Bathurst and Centre, the 1970s and 80s two-storeys of Royal Orchard and Thornlea, and newer infill with the bedrooms all upstairs. Private care is the part that does not stop at Yonge Street.

A parent in a two-storey with the bathroom upstairs

The main-floor powder room was not enough once stairs became a twice-a-day negotiation. Rather than move, the family started at five hours a day covering mornings and evenings — the two points in the day when the stairs were unavoidable.

Dementia and a walkable neighbourhood

Thornhill’s older pockets are genuinely walkable, which is a benefit until it becomes a risk. Care began at six hours a day and was built around the afternoons, when the urge to go out was strongest. He kept walking; he was simply not doing it alone.

A daughter in Ottawa, a father off Bayview

She had been driving down every second weekend and it was not sustainable. We started at four hours a day on weekdays and sent her a written note after each visit, which turned out to matter as much as the care itself.

What this looks like in practice

Most families in Thornhill start with four to eight hours of care a day. Care usually begins within a day of the first call, and the same day where someone is coming out of hospital — typically Mackenzie Health in Richmond Hill, Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital, or North York General.

We support people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s, ALS, paraplegia and reduced mobility, people recovering from a stroke or a fall, and older adults who simply need help to manage the day. In almost every case above the outcome was the same: the person stayed in their own home and received their care there.

Where in Thornhill we provide care

We provide care throughout Thornhill, including Royal Orchard, Thornlea, Grandview, German Mills, Uplands, Brownridge and the pockets on both sides of Yonge. If your street is not named here, it is almost certainly still covered — call and ask.

If any of this sounds like your situation, call 1-888-507-6236 — any time, day or night — or book a free care consultation.

Private nursing, PSW and live-in care in Thornhill

What families in Thornhill ask us for is fairly consistent — a private nurse for clinical care at home, a personal support worker (PSW) the same face each visit, or a live-in caregiver so nobody is alone through the night.

Private nursing at home

Registered nurses and registered practical nurses for wound care, catheter and ostomy support, injections, IV therapy, medication administration and clinical assessment. Registration is confirmed directly with the College of Nurses of Ontario before anyone is assigned. Administering medication is a controlled act in Ontario, so it is a nurse who does it — a support worker prompts and observes.

Personal support workers

A personal support worker — PSW — handles bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting and continence support, transfers and mobility, meal preparation, light housekeeping, laundry and escorts to appointments. Certification is verified before assignment, and a police vulnerable sector check is required.

Live-in and 24-hour care

A live-in caregiver stays in the home and sleeps, available if needed — suitable where someone genuinely sleeps through. Where the nights are active, 24-hour care puts caregivers in rotation so someone is awake at every hour. We will tell you which one fits what you describe, even when it is the more expensive answer.

Discretion

Our people arrive in ordinary clothes unless you ask otherwise, park where you tell them to, and do not discuss your household. What happens in your home stays there — see our privacy policy.

For elderly care that changes as needs change — companionship and homecare at a few hours a week, through to full assisted living support at home — the arrangement is reviewed rather than left to drift. There is no charge for the consultation and no long-term contract.
